What Should I Wear?
What to wear during a boudoir photo shoot will depend on what you are comfortable with and what style of shoot you would like; classic boudoir, pin up or retro, burlesque, vintage glamour, implied or art nude, erotic or even fetish! We’re NOT SHY in the least, it’s all about YOUR comfort level; we will make sure you are completely comfortable no matter what you choose to wear!
Popular items include any kind of lingerie, matching bra and panties sets, boy shorts, night gowns, teddies, babydolls, corsets, stockings, garter belts, gloves, high heels, peep toes shoes, boots, men’s button-down or flannel shirts, sports gear, neck ties, cowboy boots and hats, tutus, fishnet body suites, anything leather, lace or PVC, retro dresses, mini skirts, themed outfits or costumes, pearls, diamonds, hair accessories, hats, etc.
Your personal style, (or perhaps what your partner likes if you plan on giving the images as gifts), should be reflected in the outfit options you select. Layering things for a ’strip tease’ shoot can also be fun. You don’t have to buy a ton of new stuff; BE CREATIVE! Local consignment shops and boutiques are great for unique jewelry, accessories, and fashion outfits.

What Type of Props Should I Bring?
Fun props include fans, boas, hats or helmets, masks, lollipops or other sweets, wine, cigarettes, mirrors, pillows, lipstick, jewelry or other accessories, retro appliances or furniture, something your partner bought for you as a gift or related to their profession, etc.
We are always adding to our trunk of costumes and accessories for you to use, too! If we have a Pre-Shoot Meeting, or if you call or email Bebe, you can discuss what style shoot you’d like and she can help offer suggestions on potential props or outfits for the shoot based on your desires.
But I’ve Got [INSERT WHAT YOU DON'T LIKE HERE]! How Can You Make Me Look Good?
You’re being too hard on yourself! Did you read our Home Page?! Even Cindy Crawford has been quoted as saying she wished she looked like Cindy Crawford! It’s all in the Retouching. Nobody’s perfect- well, at least not forever! We all have flaws, and we all get wrinkles when we get old enough. It’s part of being human.
All the photos on our website have been Professionally Retouched- some more extreme than others. All of these women had flaws they were self-conscious about, and all of them received stunning photos of themselves that they were happy enough with to share on the internet… just sayin’.
How Can I Prepare Myself for My Shoot?
Once we receive your deposit, we will email you the login to enter our password-protected Virtual Backstage Area, where we will share our trade secrets with you to help you get the most out of your shoot! Get briefed on some professional posing techniques, and learn what to do, and what NOT to do before your shoot to look fabulous!
Can I Bring a Friend To My Shoot?
Find a ’shoot buddy’ if that will make you more comfortable. You can bring a friend or even your lover! Just make sure you pick someone you’re comfortable around and that will help you to relax and have a good time. Negative people or people who make you self-conscious are not welcome.
Please note, only 1 Female Buddy is allowed to accompany you to a Quickie Slam Event for the comfort of all participants and due to limited space. Your Buddy cannot be in any of the photos, and may be asked to stay in another room if she is too distracting during the shoot.

Where Will the Shoot Be?
Focal Impulse does not have a permanent studio space of our own (YET!). We have access to studio locations in and around Boston for various rates. These studio spaces are often ‘shared’ artist spaces and are best used for Fashion or Pinup style shoots. In-Studio shoots require you to rely more heavily on props and your interaction with the camera, and may not provide a true ‘boudoir’ experience. We do not recommend In-Studio Photo Shoots for amateurs.
For boudoir and other intimate shoots, we recommend clients take advantage of our willingness to come to you! We’ll bring the makeup artist (if you opt to use one), and all of our equipment and props to your home, or the place of a friend or family member if you like their pad better than yours and they don’t mind us taking over for a few hours! We don’t charge any additional travel fees as long as you’re within 25 miles of the Greater Boston area.
If you don’t want to shoot at your place or at a local studio, we can help you find a fun location to do your shoot. Location shoots are wonderful, especially for models looking to build their portfolios, and especially in the nice weather! An extra bonus is that if we’re creative enough, the location of the shoots are often free! We have portable lighting and love to use it!
If we have to rent space for your shoot, we ask that you pay for the cost of the space in full at the time we book the shoot. Or, book the hotel yourself (confirm our availability first!) and then surprise your partner with a special night ending in a swanky hotel room after the shoot!
You can also check the Quickie Slam Page to see when the next marathon day of ‘Quickie’ Boudoir Photo Shoots will be hosted at a posh hotel near you (and save yourself the cost of the hotel room!)- or host a Focal Impulse Party!
Amateur Photo Shoot vs. a Shoot for a Professional or Beginner Model?
Most of our clients have never done anything like this before! If you’re really nervous and are afraid you won’t have any pose ideas; DON’T WORRY! Bebe will be there to guide your posing and teach you everything you need to know to get great results! Your shoot will be all about having fun learning how to model, and getting some of the best photos of yourself you’ve ever seen. Amateurs typically do photo shoots to give their pictures as a gift, or to get beautiful photos of themselves for fun.
If you are a model or aspiring model, and would like our help expanding your portfolio, we’d like to have a Pre-Shoot Meeting with you to review your portfolio and help you determine the types of images and styles/ looks that will best benefit you in your marketing efforts and provide your portfolio with the diversity you need. No matter what type of modeling you are interested in, you should have a highly polished portfolio with a variety of full body, 3/4, and head-shots.
How Long Until I Get To See My Images?
After every shoot we take the time to go through all the photos from your set (several times over, actually) and pick the best shots from your shoot- anything we think is gorgeous as-is or could be with a little retouching. Your final Development Gallery Images are then uploaded to your Private Password-Protected Client Gallery so you can select the images you’d like Retouched and order any gift items.
If you purchased a Session CD before or at your shoot, we will also burn you a CD of Web-Resolution Digital Files of your Unretouched Development Gallery Images and mail it to you via Standard US Mail in a small padded envelop that doesn’t have any logos or the studio name anywhere on it (discretion is something we can appreciate). If you prefer, we can also require a signature for delivery for an additional charges.
This process typically takes up to three weeks* after Quickie Slams and Focal Impulse Parties; delivery time for individual photo-shoots may be faster.
* If you need your images by a certain date, please let us know when you are booking your shoot and we will confirm your delivery date and turn-around time for retouches or gift products ordered.
PLEASE NOTE: Your Development Gallery will stay online for 30 days after it is posted. You can ask for an extension if needed. If you need us to re-post your Online Development Gallery after it has been removed, there will be a $25 Service Charge.
How Do I Order Copies of My Images?
Once you review your images in your Private Client Online Development Gallery or Session CD, you can let us know what image numbers you want Retouched and if you them delivered as Web-Resolution or Print-Resolution files, and if you’d like to order any prints or other gift items.
We ask that you send your payment for any additional Retouches or Gift Items you order as soon as possible. Final retouches can’t be delivered until payment is received.
What’s The Difference Between a Print-Resolution Digital File and a Web-Resolution Digital File?
Web-Resolution Digital Files are perfect for sharing all your pics on Facebook, Twitter, Model Mayhem, and other social networking sites, or using them as wallpaper/ screensavers, etc. but are not suitable for printing. Web-Resolution Digital Files are 72 dpi, and approximately 1000px along the long edge.
Print-Resolution Digital Files are suitable for printing your photos up to approximately an 11″x17″ in size and are high-resolution JPEG files, at 300 dpi. If you upgrade to the Printable Resolution files, you will get a License for Personal Use so you can get as many copies as you like printed, or make your own albums or books (this includes use in portfolios for models), but as always, Focal Impulse still owns the copyright to all our work.
If you want an even larger print, you can purchase a Large-Format Digital File to be able to print up to approximately a 16×20 print (small poster).
If at any time in the future, you want upgrade your Web-Resolution Retouches to Print-Resolution files, we ask that you pay the $20 Printing License Fee per image. (Web-Resolution Retouches are $25 per image. Print-Resolution Retouches are $45 each.)
How Can I Get Free Retouches?
Ok, this might not actually be a question that is frequently asked, but we bet it’s frequently thought!
You will probably have a hard time picking which photos to get Retouched as part of your Glamour Photo Shoot Package, they all look so good! Do what comes naturally- talk about your experience to your friends! Show off some of your favorite photos to close friends or post a few on Facebook or Model Mayhem (and tag us or tell your friends who we are in the image caption or comments)- you get the idea. We want you to tell your friends about your Focal Impulse Experience!
YOU GET A FREE BEAUTY RETOUCH FOR EVERY FRIEND YOU REFER!
That’s a $45 value!
Yep, we LOVE to hear that a new client found out about Focal Impulse from one of our past clients. We’re glad you were happy with your experience, and flattered that you’d suggest us to your friends. As our way of saying ‘Thanks’ (and, ‘please do more of that!’), we give you a free Beauty Retouch for every friend who tells us they were referred by you when they contact us to book a shoot. Of course, it has to be when we’re booking the shoot – not afterwards- and it has to be a fully-priced shoot package (not a discounted deal or special offer).
Do You Ever Do Any “Trade For Pics”?
Are you an artist looking for professional quality photos of your designs?
If so, we wanna play dress-up with you!
Focal Impulse loves promoting artists of all kinds; fashion and costume designers, make-up artists, hair and wig stylists, body painters, set designers, accessories designers, little boutique shops, etc. in a grass-roots kind of way on our various web presences!
We get interesting subjects to photograph for our portfolio, and you get beautiful photos of your work, which will totally help sell it better! Great for everyone involved!
Who Owns the Copyright to My Pictures?
As with any work of art, professional photography is copyrighted by United States law- it’s how artists stay protected and are able to make a living. When you purchase a copy of an image, whether a print or a digital file, Focal Impulse is granting you a license to use the image for personal use only; All Other Rights are Reserved.
That means you are not authorized to sell these images or profit from them in any way- even if you purchase the Print-Resolution Digital Files. Focal Impulse Retains All Copyrights; any interested third parties should contact Focal Impulse to license the image for use. Originals are maintained in our files and remain the property of Focal Impulse Studio. You can print them if you purchase the Print-Resolution Files, make your own albums and gift items, use them to market yourself, give copies of the images or prints of the images as gifts, and other personal uses.

If Focal Impulse Owns the Copyright, Does That Mean You Will Sell My Photos or Post Them Online?!
NO. We are a client-service boutique. Our business relies on our ability to be discreet. Many of our client prefer to keep their images private. We would never post any images of you without your explicit consent to use that specific photo for that purpose.
If there was ever an opportunity to sell one of your images, Focal Impulse would contact you to negotiate a share in the profits before your photos were ever used for anything.
